Waituna Wetlands

April 11, 2010

Sylvia at Waituna wetlands

Visited Waituna wetlands today and went for a walk with the family on the recently built board walk, a joint project between DOC and Environment Southland. The weather was lovely and no wind.

The place is an awesome hidden spot, that is still relatively unknown even by people who live in the region. It’s the first New Zealand wetland internationally recognised under the Ramsar convention, important for its size and biological diversity in its coastal lagoons, estuaries, peatlands and freshwater swamps.

The wetlands are still threatened with poor water quality and increased nutrification of the water from farm run-off but there are various action groups working on conservation.

My kids loved the walk, the lookout and checking out the water spots along the way (though the double stroller was a bit of a squeeze and didn’t fit over the bridges -note to DOC).

Go there if you get a chance.
