Water: a hot topic

April 17, 2010

Water is a hot topic at the moment. National Geographic have just done an issue all about water and The  Listener features water this week with stories about the threat to fresh water in Canterbury and the dismissal of Environment Canterbury councillors, as well as another story about water shortages around the world.

There was also an interesting story on Thursday on National Radio’s Morning Report  called “spectre of sacking may have stayed Manwaatu council’s hand”. It was about the council backing down on making farmers have consents in an effort to do better water management and regulate nitrate loss from the land.  Ecologist Mike Joy spoke about the atrocious state of the Manawatu River, which apparently ranks as one of the worst rivers in the western world for water quality in the world (although Federated Farmers is disputing the figures).
