Southland floodwaters receding

April 28, 2010

Flood waters are receding in Southland, no doubt to the relief of farmers, rural Southlanders and staff at Environment Southland. It has been called a one in 10 year flood. The flood banks held and ponding systems worked.

Damage has been fairly minimal all things considered, though costs are still being calculated. Road damage, waterlogged paddocks, lost baleage and some waterlogged cars seems to be the main things to have suffered, plus all those poor tourists being airlifted from Fiordland tracks.

Here in Invers it was dry and fairly mild today.

This was the Southland Times coverage of the flood today.
