Floods in Otago

I wasn’t sure I was going to make it from Invercargill to Dunedin today. But the roads had opened by yesterday. Driving up I didn’t see much flooding, apart from a bit of surface flooding, until just past Waihola.

Coming round the corner where you cross the Taieri River, water was everywhere having spilled the river banks. Paddocks were totally submerged and lines of trees were buried halfway in the water. After the turnoff to Henley, everything is under water and I could see houses in the distance still had water right up to them.

The last time I saw flooding like this was in 2006. That was worse then as almost the entire Taieri Plains were underwater and a lot of Mosgiel got flooded; this time it seemed like the water was more confined to the floodpath of the river. But apparently the Taieri recorded its highest ever flow on Saturday, 1200cumecs at Outram, since records began in 1968. This is what the Otago Daily Times said about the flooding and subsequent clean up.
