Major report on Southland water quality out soon

July 16, 2010

Environment Southland is soon to release a report on the health of Southland’s fresh water, according to its latest edition of Envirosouth. This will be an important report and aims to answer pertinent questions about Southland waterways including how safe the water is to drink, swim in and collect seafood from.

In a brief summary of the report, the picture doesn’t look great. It says water quality at most popular freshwater swimming sites is frequently below standards outlined in Southland’s water plan (stricter than national standards) for safe bathing.  I have no desire to swim in lower Southland rivers but I have swum at one of the bathing sites regularly tested –Lake Te Anau Boat Harbour Beach, which looks okay.

Have a read of the report summary in Envirosouth or wait till the full report comes out.
