Skiing risks greater than we think

So much for skiing being a safe sport. Hasn’t been the best season in NZ for coverage given Mt Hutt has had four fatalities this season and one at Coronet Peak (an 80-year-old Japanese man who was an experienced skiier but fell and hit his head).

Mt Hutt has also had an avalanche within the ski field that buried two people and then 1200 people were stuck up there the night because of massive winds meaning it was too dangerous to drive down the access road. And the Otago Daily Times did a story last week about the surge in the number of skifield accidents at Cardrona requiring the rescue helicopter getting called to the ski field 11 times since June 24.

No wonder the calls for the compulsory wearing of helmets. I did notice more skiiers wearing them than in previous years. I put mine on, although admittedly it was after I took a good crash in heavy crud snow  and wrenched my shoulder. Takes a while to change a mindset.
