High time rivers were celebrated

September 13, 2010

Harking back to my earlier topic on water issues, it was great to see a tv series on Prime on Sunday about New Zealand rivers (although this also connects with outdoor recreational uses).

Photographer Craig Potten is fronting the series looking at a particular river each show. It started with the Clutha river, discussing the ecology, history and impact the river has had on the people nearby, from gold rushes to the wine industry.

The best part I thought was the call to preserve rivers like the Clutha from further hydro development (even though it is obviously not in a pristine condition). They also talked about the great stretch of kayaking lost when the Clyde dam was built and how important rivers are for recreational usage, whether on it or enjoying it from the banks.
